STUSSY/A Brief History

STUSSY logo on a hoodie

In case you didn’t know, STUSSY was what revolutionized casual wear in the 1980s and 90s. They started off as a small clothing brand on the surfer scene in California. Eventually becoming a style icon.

Shawn Stussy, a passionate surfer, started and promoted the brand by printing T-shirts and surfboards. Soon he would be show casing his designs to respectable companies and win them over.

The idea behind Shawn’s Hip Hop/rap inspired style was how it pushed social boundaries. This new style intensely resonated with youth worldwide that were into the rap/surf culture.

The brand soon grew and was committed to selling high quality, low costing limited products. This gave the brand a value like no other and the “Stussy Vibe” spread organically.

The stussy vibe not only resonated with consumers but also big shot clothing brands like Nike.

Nike x STUSSY/A Partnership for The Ages

Nike and STUSSY collaborate

It all started in 2000 which was the start of a long partnership to come. The first sneaker the collaboration made was the Stussy x Nike Air Huarache. This was a European project between Nike and Stussy.

The idea was to take Nike’s best running shoes and make 2 new colorways in limited quantities. They were then to be sold at the Stussy London store in very limited quantities

This made them more precious as they are almost impossible to find today. The project started a long tradition which continues to this day and pushes the boundaries of fashion with each sneaker release.

Let’s look at a few examples to estimate how the Stussy x Nike Air Zoom CG 2 Black will do on the resale market.

Nike Air Max 95 Stussy Black

As part of an almost yearly tradition of releases, Nike and Stussy released a simple looking Air max. It features an almost all black upper, tongue with hints of white. A white mid-sole and white out-sole.

According to StockX, the trade range is between $154-$296 with the average price being $253. That’s an average profit of $53 before taxes and service charges.

Had you sold these at peak resale, profit would have been $180. That’s mediocre resale at most.

However, by looking at more similar examples. We get a much better idea of what to expect from the Stussy x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon CG 2 Black.

The sneaker features a black swoosh, woven overlays and a mesh upper. It also has a caged air unit and the “STUSSY” branding on the heel and toe. A fossil colored sole finishes off the design.

The resale side is looking really good. According to StockX, the trade range is between $351-$707 with the average price being $309. That’s an average profit of almost $160 before taxes and charges.

At peak resale value, profit would have been $839 which is crazy good! The most profitable sizes were also 4-5.5.

Nike Stussy Air Zoom Spiridon Cage 2 Pure Platinum

Colorway: Pure Platinum/Black-White

Perhaps the most similar colorway to the Stussy x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon CG 2 Black. This may give us the most accurate estimate.

The sneaker features black overlays and a mesh upper with a black “swoosh”. There is also a caged air unit on the heel with similar branding on the heel and toe as is on the “Fossil”.

The resale is good with trade range between $456-$627 and an average price of $247. That’s an average profit of $87 and a peak potential profit of $685 before taxes and service fees.

These colorways give us a good indication for very good resale value for the Stussy x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon CG 2 Black.

Stussy x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon CG 2 Black Frontal View

Retail Price: $160

Estimated Resell: $300-$400

Release Date: 15/05/2020

Colorway: Black/Cool Grey-Black

Just like last month’s pair, this features a mesh upper and a round shaped logo on the heel. The logo is also found on the tongue and toe with the iconic “swoosh” in black.

The caged air unit once again sits atop a grey mid-sole and grey out-sole. The out-sole comes in grey and white with the Nike “swoosh” near the toe and “STUSSY” near the heel.

Over all, I am digging the design and this color in particular. This may be the best colorway yet.

Estimated Resell

The Stussy x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon CG 2 Black seems to be quite profitable. The previously mentioned colorways did well along with this being a limited release. Make these a promising cop.

To get your money back in certain states in the US, you will need to sell for at least $190.

That should earn you pure profits of at least $110. It could also be way more than that depending on various factors. At peak resale value, profits as high as $460 are also possible.

On StockX, you can see that they’re currently selling at very good prices.
