A Closer Look at the Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Dunky

Nike SB Dunks have gained fame for their out-of-the-box concepts and progressive means of redefining a skate shoe. Ben & Jerry’s is familiar with that methodology as they’ve gained unparalleled fame for their own unique flavors and packaging for decades. And despite much of fat-tongued Dunk appeal being the unusual nature of collaborations, Nike SB and Ben & Jerry’s share a lot of core values.

It’s now a pesky waiting game for the upcoming May 23rd/26th release date of the epic Ben & Jerry’s x Nike SB Dunk Low collaboration. In the meantime, we’ve decided to show you a first-hand look at the “Chunky Dunky” Dunks, which is inspired by the company’s trademark flavor of “Chunky Monkey”. Decorated with cow fur exteriors with mismatched patterns, a Swoosh with extended “melted” edges, and the rainbow covering on the insoles and lining, these SB Dunks offer up that truly unhinged design in all the right ways.

More from Nike & Dunks – Past and Present

It’s clear we’re in a full-blown Nike Dunk resurgence. It’s been fun to see a strong second coming of Dunks. One could argue that they’re never gone out of style but their popularity has had a sizable increase as of recent. This could be considered the Dunk’s second life span since the mid-2000s and Nike is feeding the hot hand.

While we’re on the subject of psychedelic kicks, another rumored collaboration is the SB Dunk with the Grateful Dead. This Dunk Low pays homage to the band’s fuzzy bear mascot originally illustrated by Bob Thomas. The release is still TBD but we’re excited.

What we have seen is the recent release of the Comme des Garcons Dunk. This shoe that’s available now in women’s sizing is reselling for about 60% over retail! Congrats to anyone who got lucky on the Dover Street Market web store.

Another noteworthy release of late was the trio of Dunks with Virgil Abloh and Off White. Inspired by bold university color blocking and pantones, this inventive spin on the Dunk was a breath of fresh air. Still waiting to get my red UNLV pair.

Of course, there have been others like the Travis Scott Dunks, Raygun Dunks, Kentucky and Syracuse Dunks, and more that have started a hype train. I’m sure this won’t be coming to a halt any time soon.

Resale Anticipation

Out of 31 early sales we’ve seen so far, the average resale price is over $1700 which leads us to believe the Chunky Dunkys will have a somewhat limited amount of stock. Whether this is true or not, it’s still a no-brainer to go for them come release day. A guaranteed sell out awaits. Now if the resell value is still in the thousands of dollars, that’s another story we’ll wait to see.

To be honest, I’ve seen a lot of hate on these while doing my usual internet research. Some are saying that the partnership is sophomoric and forced. I’m on the completely other end of the spectrum and thought these were a masterpiece from the first images I saw. There’s been a lot of exposure and press so I have to speculate that the awareness of this release has gone beyond the usual sneaker community.

That being said I believe the resale value will be in the $400 to $500 range to be conservative. All signs point to an even higher premium on the secondary market.
